Press Review of the week

11th March 2011

Officials pay tribute to the women of the Arab world during this International Women’s Day. Owing to AFP, “Women have played a “crucial role” in bringing about change in Northern Africa”, EU High Representative Catherine Ashton and European Commissioner for Justice Viviane Reding said last Tuesday in a joint statement to mark the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.”

Arab women are going out of their traditional and familial sphere to play a crucial role on the riots. “Protesters braving teargas, volunteer nurses, bloggers, they are on all fronts of the protest movements that shook the Arab world, and they are often in the front line.” said Catherine Monnet on RFI. In the 30′s, the first Women Empowerment and Rights Organisations were founded and played a relevant role during the struggles against colonialism. But, now, they are moreoften media owing to Internet: they get the compassion of the public opinion as much as harsh criticism, as writes Tunisian blogger Lina Ben Mhenni.

Oddly enough, Lebanese Ministry of Tourism launched few days ago a new campaign… a little bit sexist. What has irritated some bloggers like Abzyy’s Blog, Angie Nassar from NowLebanon or BeirutSpring
